“This is an important time for the Human Scale Education as we see increased concern about the wellbeing of young people and as the schooling system undergoes significant structural change.”
James Wetz, Director
About Human Scale
Human Scale is an education reform movement committed to small scale learning communities based on the values of democracy, justice and respect. Human Scale Education works directly with schools and parents to promote human scale learning environments where children and young people are known and valued as individuals.
About The Human Scale Education Movement
Putting relationships at the heart of the organisation and design of our schools.
The Human Scale Education Movement (HSEM) believes that ‘humanity of scale’ and the ‘primacy of relationships’ should not only inform the design of our schools but should also influence our public sector services.
“Our aim is to place the principles and arguments for human scale practice at the heart of the education policy agenda – showcased through particular HSE projects and partnerships but ultimately accessible to all young people.”
Tony Breslin, Chair
HSEM is committed to small learning environments for students, teachers and parents whether as stand- alone schools or as schools within a school (SWAS) in large schools. Such small scale structures make possible a scale which promotes strong, nurturing relationships, fostering respect for self, others and the community. They also provide the bedrock for innovations in pedagogy and curriculum that enable all learners to be active participants in their own learning and recast achievement in ways which are long overdue.
