Small Schools - Big Future

Secondary Schools Project: Human Scale Schools

The Project

Human Scale Schools is a ground-breaking initiative to support up to 50 large secondary schools develop human scale principles and practices. The project aims to build a solid core of human scale schools that can stand up as effective examples of human scale principles in practice.

Originated and inspired in collaboration with the Gulbenkian Foundation, and with generous support from the Paul Hamlyn Foundation and the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation, the Human Scale Schools project is the educational priority of the Gulbenkian Foundation for the duration of the project (2006-2009). The programme is being coordinated by Human Scale Education.

All secondary schools in England, Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland have received details of the project, including the support available for successful applicants. This includes consultancy from practising headteachers and advisers, mentoring, help from a 'critical friend', opportunities to share effective practices and visiting human scale secondary schools in the USA.

Schools likely to be interested in the project are large secondaries planning to reorganise in order to encourage more positive student/staff learning relationships as a precursor to engaging students more effectively in their learning - and thus raising their achievement.

Specifically, assistance is offered to schools wishing to undertake one or more of the following developments:

  • creating small learning communities or 'mini-schools' made up of a small team of teachers responsible for the learning and well-being of a mixed-age group of students

  • promoting other developments based on human scale education in the areas of learning, student participation and community links

  • creating a human scale school as part of the DfES' Building Schools for the Future initiative.
